How Fusionball is played

The elements below define the sport. The full rulebook follows, with every rule tagged Fixed, Proposed, or Open.

Fixed elements

The field

Football-style field with two end zones, played at full soccer width. Regulation uprights at each end with a vertical 4-foot target ring resting on the crossbar: bottom at 10 ft, center at 12 ft.

Teams

Eleven on the field, fifteen on the active roster, one non-playing coach. No offensive and defensive units: players stay on through changes of possession.

The clock

Exactly 80 minutes on a fixed running clock, two halves, 15-minute halftime. No stoppage time.

Continuous play

No downs. The ball may be carried, thrown forward, thrown backward, lateraled, or kicked at any point. A change of possession reverses play immediately. No heading.

Scoring

Touchdown 6. Target 3. Uprights 1. Higher value only: a ball through the ring scores 3, not 4. No touchdown by recovering a loose ball.

The point-after

Required after every touchdown, and live from the instant of the score with the defense still in play. Dunk or throw it through the ring for 3, or reset and take the uprights for 1. A touchdown resolves to 6, 7, or 9.

The end zone

Resolves attacks; it is not a sanctuary. No backward pass out of the end zone to keep possession. A ball that touches the ground in an end zone goes to the team defending it.

Turnovers

An interception is live immediately. A fumble is live and may be recovered by either team.
